Newton wins in style at Round 1 of the new FOC
Mendip Raceway was to host Round one of the all new Fifth On Road Championship, and boy was it good. The freshly prepared venue was in fantastic shape.
The Series consists of Single Day events. The track is open for practice on the Saturday and that was the chance for us all to get out and sample the track. For some of us run our cars for the first time in 2019, or ever for those with new kit.
For the first Couple of Round this year, I am the only PWS Modelsport Team member racing, with Mark and Lee racing other classes at the start of the season, I will just have myself to bounce set up ideas off!
For myself with the FG Mini I was running a new to me car after selling my record breaking car shortly before the first round. I was hoping this wasn’t going to be a mistake on my part! There was some new faces and some fast times getting pumped in. Last years Second place finisher David Parish was out with an all new car. Banging in some impressive times and topping the time sheets. For me it was a little different, I was focused on my long run pace as lasting for 30 minutes is a challenge. This meant I was a little lower down the timing sheets.
Sunday race day, suns up but its still cold enough to have a coat on and the track was dry. I was out in heat one along with Parish and some other fast runners. New to FG MINI’s this year was the very fast Paul Avery who would get the advantage of running in heat 2.
My car was faultless and I managed to TQ the round by some 20 seconds. This was completely unexpected but a welcome early banker. This time turned out to be an unbeatable by anybody including myself. The track didn’t improve during the day, this meant I posted 2 more times very close.
Finals time and 30 minutes is a long final where anything can happen. However I was able to get away and lead from the start without any challenge throughout the whole 30 minutes. Parish was the only car to stay on the same lap, until around 26 minutes where he ran out of fuel!
Round 2 is at Halifax on 18/19 May 2019
